Core aeration

Aeration pulls small plugs of soil from the lawn so water, air and nutrients reach the roots. Paired with overseeding, it is the most effective way to thicken a thin or tired lawn.

When is the best time to aerate?: Early fall is best for the cool-season grasses common in south-central Pennsylvania, with spring a good second choice.
How do I measure my lawn?: Measure only the grass you want aerated, not the whole lot. Length times width, in feet, gives square feet. Online satellite map tools work well too, and a quarter acre is about 10,900 sq ft.
